Skincare: FDA Findings on Sunscreen

Doctors are worried some people may skip sunscreen because of recent reports that they can cause cancer.
Last spring the Environmental Working Group, or EWG, called on the Food and Drug Administration to review data on the safety of retinyl palmitate.
The EWG said its research from a lab study in the UK found the compound elevates the risk of skin cancer.
American Society of Dermatologic Surgery president Dr. Jeffrey Dover says don’t skip sunscreen based on research from a lab study on animals in Europe.
The FDA said Friday it’s awaiting a final review of data on retinyl palmitate by the National Toxicology Program of the US National Institute of Environmental Sciences. The findings should be in by next January.
In the meantime, doctors say sunscreen is only one component of sun safety and people should wear protective clothing and should avoid being in the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Skin Cancer Awareness

Dr. Ted Lain of Steiner Ranch Dermatology stopped by Good Day to talk about skin cancer awareness.
Tips:
•    Avoid sun exposure during the most intense sunlight hours, 10 am to 3 pm
•    Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes prior to going outside, reapply every two hours if swimming or sweating
•    Average-sized adults require a shotglass-full amount of sunscreen to obtain the SPF noted ont he bottly. Applying elss reduces the SPF.
•    Wear a wide-brimmed hat (4-inch brim) to protect the ears and nose even more. Baseball caps are not sufficient.
•    Don’t use a tanning bed. they use very powerful bulbs and significantlly increase the risk of skin cancer.
•    Don’t rely on moisturizers with sunscreen. The type of sunscreen in moisturizers gets broken down quickly after application.
